Discussion for Week 15

If you have already given your second persuasive presentation, use this time to reflect on the differences between your first and second presentations. Was this one easier? Harder? What choices did you make in terms of topic, references, and visuals? If you haven't yet given your final presentation, wait until you've given yours to reflect-- or, use this post to talk about what you've noticed in other presentations!

Let's end strong this week! Good luck to everyone!

  1. The second persuasive speech was a little easier considering the preparation was not as intensive. Due to shorter speaking times it did not take as long to prepare, but there are inherent difficulties delivering a persuasive speech in such a short amount of time. I did enjoy the second speech and I feel that I delivered well, however I would have liked a longer speech to deliver a more impressive topic.

  2. I believe the second speech was easier and harder at the same time. It was harder because the time limit. I mean almost everyone went over the time limit last time and this speech was alot shorter so it was alot harder to get everything into the allotted time limit. But it was also easier because we had practice with this type of speech, we all knew what we had to add so it was much easier to do.

  3. In terms of difficulty of requirements, I don't think there was much of a difference between the two. While the first had a second visual aid to consider, the second had a more constricted time frame. Otherwise the expectations were very similar.

Since I was not well-prepared for the second speech, perhaps that one ended up slightly more difficult for me, but I'm not sure, because I may not have been well-prepared for the first one either; I don't quite remember.

One thing I found I had to do in both of the persuasive speeches was to excise some arguments or aspects (at least one from each speech) during the outline/practice stages, so that I would have more of a chance of staying within the time frames. In each case I took out what I considered to be least essential to the speech's message.

  4. I think this one was easier in the sense that we didn't have to speak for a long time. On the other hand, I noticed in my speech and a few others, that they seem more like informative speeches until the conclusion where the speaker then tries to persuade the audience to do something. I tried to pick a visual that would compliment my speech and something I could use and explain things off of it to help demonstrate my knowledge and help give some of that knowledge to the audience.

  5. For the second speech, I felt that it was harder to find a topic to discuss becuase I used my best one first but then again it was easier because it was much shorter. For my visuals, this was the first time that I just used a powerpoint presentation so it was different becuase I didnt have anything to be more effective. All in all so far I think these second persuasive presentations have gone great. Last Week!!

  6. I thought the second speech was easier for me just based on the topic I chose. I chose a topic that I thought was easier to present for me. My first topic was a lot of detailed information and I had a little difficulty making it a persuasive topic because it would have worked easier as an informative topic. I also thought the time limit for the second presentation was a little harder to meet since it was a shorter presentation. Who knew it would be harder to do a shorter speech. All in all I think the second round of speeches went pretty well.

  7. The second speech was definitely much easier for me as well. I believe the main reason for improvement was that I chose a topic that was a lot more familiar to me. It also helped that I spent a bit more time reviewing the material and spent a lot more time setting up the outline in such a way that it would be understood by the audience. All in all I found it to be a very successful presentation.

  8. I thought about my topic and I could have done it in two minutes or ten minutes. It was hard to give some detail but not too much. So I think it was a good challenge because I think attention spans are four to five minutes, so I think this speech was a great challenge for me. Get as much info in as possible in little time.

  9. This one was more difficult in comparison with my first one, as I had a bit more time to hone in on my topic with the first one, whereas I volunteered to go first without thinking of the long-term consequences. I know how I work, and if this was some sort of impromptu presentation, I wouldn't worry about it. However, trying to pull out the most effective words on command without that much practice did hurt me a little bit. I feel as though I could've been a little more fluid in my second, but I wasn't.

  10. I felt that this time around, the speech was much easier. I felt a lot more confident and much more reassured during the presentation. Everything seemed more fluid within the speech, and I felt comfortable giving it. I had ample time to prepare, and I felt like there was more than enough information to use for substance. I just wish I had more time to go over all of the features, like I do with customers at Best Buy.
