Discussion for Week 13

Hi everyone,

This week, continuing with the trend of working on your web portfolios, share any thoughts you have, and possibly progress of your web sites. Were the lab days useful? What sorts of things are you most focused on with your sites? Is there anything I can do to help?

  1. I really liked the lab time! It gave me some time to focus on designing my site, during which I was able to work through some conceptual roadblocks in my design. So far, I've been focused on getting a usable and appealing interface. Most of my problems have been around guiding the viewer's focus around the site, and how many pages I should have. So far I'm thinking four pages including the index. Now I'm moving on to actually making graphical resources. I already have a lot of my code from a previous portfolio site, so a lot of the work is done on that front. I'm feeling good about the site so far, and I'll post a screenshot once I make any serious progress.

  2. I think the lab time was great. It gave me a chance to ask some people around me for help on the site becuase I am so to say computer challenged. As far as progress goes my site it almost done. Its nothing fancy, just a page with simple deisng and links to everything, but it works so I'll take it for sure. I am looking forward to seeing the other sites when we show them.

  3. I thought the lab time is great too. What I am finding though is that people with less web design experiance are having an easier time creating their websites with editors than I am having creating it in dreamsweaver. So, I may just give up the hard code method and pick up a point and click editor to make my pages. I have a solid framework as it is with pictures, resumes, and discussions about com realated course work, but its just not very stylistic yet. I enjoy making websites and if I had more time outside of class to devote to creating the website I think I would be a lot happier with how mine will turn out. This is a really neat project to expose non-programmers to the world of web development.

  4. The lab time was well used I feel and it allowed us to see what other people were doing and we could feed off of that. It also helped that some people really know what they are doing so others who may not know as much were able to ask them on the spot how to do something. I'm mainly concerned with how my site functions and how the content is displayed.

  5. I believe that the days spent in the lab were very useful, mainly bc we all had a chance to ask each other for help directly rather than getting explanations and hopefully figuring it out as we went on. I got a ton of work done during these sessions. I really appreciated the time made for us!!!

  6. I thought the lab days were very helpful. I tend to procrastinate and wait until the last minute for things like this, but during the lab days I was able to get a good start and it got me interested in my portfolio and got me to work on it out of class. I think this assignment gives an interesting twist to the normal com class and I think its a good assignment.

  7. My website is coming along nicely. I spent a lot of time watching Dreamweaver tutorials on YouTube and have learned a lot about using Div Tags and CSS. My biggest issue is that I have no creativity and my website is very plain. The lab days were very useful and my website is almost complete. All of the formatting and page layout is complete, all that's left is to fill in the information for each page. I hope to have it finished soon.

  8. I have like these lab days. It's nice to make myself work on the website because I love to procrastinate on projects. I don't mind the making of the website my trouble is thinking up content to put in my website. I hope I can get this done by the end of the week so I can prep for my other exams and finals coming up real soon.

  9. Although I didn't end up getting as much use out of the labs as I could have, I think the idea of having lab days was good. They gave people not familiar with Web design an opportunity to get direct support with issues they may have had, within a setting specific to the class. They also let us take a break from other class activities so that we could concentrate better on our portfolios.

So far I have not gotten a lot done on my site, but I've designed part of the page layout (including the menu), and I've basically determined what material I will include. If it's all right, I might recycle some content (e.g., written material about myself) from one of my older sites; since I technically may have been allowed to update my old site instead of making a new one anyway, I assume there is no problem with such recycling.

I will probably keep things simple with this site technologically speaking, since it is not a Web design course. Most of my attention, I think, ought to be focused on the content and the message it conveys, as well as on aesthetics and theme.

  10. Everyone....thanks for the feedback! You all have been so diligent with using class time very well. I've been really excited about the different projects everyone's been sharing.

Personally, I also work well if there's a set amount of time in place to work on something. If I can sit in place for a good hour and focus on that one task, I tend to get a lot done. So this has been very good for me as well.

  11. I've definitely benefited and enjoyed the lab days. It's given me quite a bit of time to play with some design ideas I've had for a long time that I wanted to implement into my own personal site. Hopefully all will turn out well.

  12. As far as my site is concerned, progress is slow. I know what plan I have as far as content wise, I just need to gather the materials. Since I've already had experience in web design the actual creation of the site isn't where time will be most spent, its on the content. I always seem to have the toughest time decided what to say and how to say it on the site.

The lab times were really helpful for myself and I gurantee countless others. I was able to plan out more material for the site as well as word choice. Lastly, I was able to learn some cool tricks with iWeb and MobileMe that will make my sight look nicer and feel more professional.
