I'll start. I think it will look better once I add some actual content and some images (planning to do that with the sidebar).
This is the blog for COM315, a course at Purdue University that works to enhance students' abilities to communicate technical information comprehensively. We work collaboratively to develop projects online and offline and enhance our skillsets.
Commenting on my post (heh!)-- forgot to mention that I'm using CSSEdit to manage the stylesheet. I like this program primarily for navigation purposes- especially on larger stylesheets, it's a lot easier to work with.
ReplyDeleteWhat is CSSEdit? I have a limited background with web development but I do understand that concept of CSS. I imagine the program that you are using is a way to quickly build your css code using a graphical interface as opposed to manually coding it all? I am finding out that I do not really care for dreamweaver and I am trying to decide if I should scrap what I have and start over or just keep wrestling with this program to figure it out and make a clean looking site. How much do you know about the SPRY stuff in DW? I know that you can use it to make toolbars, but thats as far as I know. Any advice you could give would be great. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCSSEdit is a program for Mac that enables you to create and edit stylesheets, both in a GUI and/or by code editing. I like to edit code by hand, but it's so much easier to navigate through my stylesheet in the program. If you want, I could upload a sample stylesheet that you could plug in and play with. Granted, though, this is a Mac app- I think I posted some links in Blackboard too to others (let me know if those don't appear active).
ReplyDeleteHere's my recommendation if you don't care much for Dreamweaver-- if you've already built your site in DW, I would save that site, make a backup and then start to edit it in a different editor. (Maybe a text editor or another interface if you have one). We could also set up a time to go over what you have and maybe I can be of help with SPRY.
All good ideas, though... let's further talk about this Monday, too!
Another note as I'm thinking of it-- in no way do I want to suggest that Dreamweaver or a GUI is the only to build a site, or at least requisite. I visualized it as a good starting point, particularly as a learning tool. I'll keep posting more things as I see them that may be useful, though.
ReplyDeleteThe web is so full of tools that are good for learning purposes or as tools in your 'toolkit' of web dev. We could spend an entire semester experimenting these and figuring out the best practices. My hope is that this is a good exercise to get us thinking about how communication strategies can be utilized in technology and media (such as web-based).
Those are my two cents for now!
