Discussion for Week 14

As we approach the end of the semester, use this space to reflect on anything we haven't openly discussed on the blog, or perhaps for any questions you may have. Other good things to note might be our final impromptu practice day last week, as well as the additional lab time we had. I'm very much looking forward to the final presentations and the portfolios! The ideas everyone has come up with have been great, and it's been such a pleasure to see everyone taking the assignments seriously and developing such unique topics.

  1. I feel like this semester has been a good one. We got better at speaking and the lot of us seemed to enjoy it. Last week's impromptu practice day showed that we've all become very comfortable with each other, and find it easy to relate to our audience. The speeches are getting better and I like to think that people presenting have really taken the comments to heart and tried to better themselves around them; personally speaking, I know I have. The only thing I wish to change was to hear more impromptu speeches, it was fun listening to what people could come with off the top of there head and spinning it to the class.

  2. I think this semester has been beneficial to me. I can see an improvement in my speaking, and thats what I took the class for. This class also opened me up to new technologies and ways of presenting other than PowerPoint. I think with the way technology is progressing every day that is important. I also think the impromptu practice days were a good exercise. They allowed me to become more comfortable speaking in front of people as the semester went on, even if some of the topics were a little strange!

  4. I think this class definitely improved my public speaking skills. I am usually a shy person when it comes to giving speeches and I think this fortified my confidence a lot. On Monday I will be trying to persuade the class that buying my band's CD is a good investment of time and money. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the company that is printing them and they might not be available for a couple of weeks.

  5. I definitely think everyone's public speaking skills have improved a lot from this course. It also helps that we are more comfortable with everyone in the class, so it makes people less nervous about their speech. Good semester though!

  6. Overall, I definately the course has proved to help me out with relaying technical information out to an audience. I also enjoyed the chance we were given to set up a web portfolio. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while now and now I can just focus on adding to it.

  7. The impromptu speech day was certainly interesting, even though I was reluctant to go up myself, since I realized that I wouldn't be able to think of interesting things to say on the spur of the moment. I think that the ability to improvise is a very valuable skill to have; fortunately, a lot of people in this class seem to have it. My own talents seem to lie elsewhere; when given sufficient time, I am able to think in a structured, insightful, and meticulous manner, but in general I tend to think a bit slowly.

  8. This class was so much better than my COM114 class. More laid back and we can choose what we want to talk about and that's nice for being interested in topics. 1 more week!

  10. This semester was very beneficial to me and I appreciated the opportunities to explore student selected topics. I believe that I will walk away with more exposure to some interesting technologies and websites that will help me in my academic and professional career. The attitude of the class was refreshingly casual but also professional during speech times. I have enjoyed having a younger instructor because the insight and feedback has been positive and relevant.
