Discussion for Week 11

Please reflect on the persuasive speeches for this week. What presentations stood out to you, and why? Were there aspects of presentations where you had the most interest? For those who haven't yet presented, what are you doing to prepare for this presentation?

One thing I would like to note is that we've had some very active Q&A sessions. Several of our speakers were challenged, but everyone was up to the task and handled themselves well. I think we're off to a great start.

  1. I think we've had some good persuasive speeches. Chris's speech really stands out to me in that it show cased both arguments and ended the speech with you knowing what he was trying to persuade us to do.

In terms of preparation, I'm just trying to hit the main points and make sure I'm fulfilling the speech requirements.

  2. The presentation that stood out the most was the one on the faked moon landing. He really hit different points and brought a lot of things to light that many of us haven't considered before and caused a lot of students to take a step back and rethink things.

For my presentation, I'm hoping that it makes sense. Trying to explain different physics concepts to someone who has never heard it before makes the speech go everyones' head, and if I try and bring it down to far, it might come off as talking down to the audience. Lastly, I need to make sure that each point flows together and the conclusion creates a good finish to give the class something new to consider.

  3. I really enjoyed the moon landing speech as well. I thought that the information was well organized and what really stood out was the defense in the Q&A sections. I really appreciated that credible sources were cited in this speech because anytime you try to discuss a conspiracy theory there is a lot of room for less than credible sources.
Another aspect that I liked was the calm delivery of concepts as opposed to an all-out attack on the opposing view. It is important to be confidant about your point of view but at the same time being able to maintain your composure when someone challenges you. Overall I was excited to hear a new point of view along with points that I had never heard before.

  4. I agree with Brandon and Adam about Seth's moon landing presentation. He seemed to be very interested in the topic and that made his presentation spectacular. For the majority of the speech I sat there with my jaw on the floor, it captured all of my attention. He really seemed to know what he was talking about and used the powerpoint very well to highlight his presentation instead of the powerpoint dominating the presentation. I was really looking forward to the persuasive presentations because it will bring out more emotion which leads to a more convincing speech. The question and answer session was very well prepared too. Well done Seth!

  5. I think that all the presentation have been really good so far. It seems like everyone is much more comfortable trying to persuade people on something they are interested in rather than just inform people. Still the one that stands out the most to me in the moon landing conspiracy topic. I thought it was really interesting and hit all the main points and elements of a persusive speech.
For the preparation of this speech, I thought the hardest part was picking a topic. Once I got past that road block it was pretty simple to put together. There have been some really good and interesting topics so far and I am looking forward to the ones to come.

  6. I believe all the presentations so far have been very good. Some have been more convincing then others but overall they were excellent. It is difficult, in some cases, to properly convey your topic and argument in the time frame allotted but everyone worked well with what they had. I believe persuasive speeches are more difficult to give because of the added effort of convincing your audience of a certain issue. With an informative speech you simply speak about your topic. In the real world, persuasive speeches are more common then informative speeches and the practice we receive from this class will benefit us later in life.

  7. UH ok! so everything i just typed disappeared. SO i think that everyones speeches have been great. And very interesting so far. It seems that everyone has great knowledge about their topic and are very credible. Including myself i think that people could have been more persuasive instead of informative. I also thought that only having 7 minutes to lay down background information facts, etc and hit all you persuading topics was hard for me.

  8. Overall I enjoyed everyones presentations. The one that stood out most to me was AJs. He put's a lot of creativity into his presentations that really keep my attention. On another note, I also agree with Allie about the time frame. There might be a topic that you want to cover that might not be familiar with everyone and to give them a full understanding of the topic and then persuade them with the allotted time was a bit difficult for me.

  9. Many of the persuasive speeches have been extremely interesting.

I think that some major factors that make persuasive speeches especially intriguing are (a) unexpected or out of the ordinary subject material, like in the moon landing speech, (b) use of amusing or humorous material, like in the demonstration in AJ's speech, and (c) clear detailing of positions and potential arguments on both sides (along with a demonstration that one's own side "wins" overall), because it makes the subject matter seem more expertly handled and makes for better persuasion. If a speech seems too one-sided, I don't think it grips the listener as much, because less conflict is apparent as well as less "suspense" regarding how exactly the opposing sides will balance out in the end.

I, of course, have already presented my speech by now, but perhaps I should still mention how I prepared for it. Mostly I looked for relevant articles and statistics on Google and on Purdue's online library. The statistics in my presentation were pulled from an article found through the online library and from a report on the Business Software Alliance's website, to which one of my major sources (an article by Koroush Ghazi) linked. This article, which I am fairly sure I found through Google, will shortly be posted separately to the blog.

  10. I thought for the most part everyone did a great job. Everyone had great facts that informed the audience and were strong in delivery. But there was a few that I thought that were more informative than persuasive. But with this round of speeches I would say I have learned something from everyone and my options have been tested and I think that is a job well done.

  11. One of the speeches that stood out to me the most was A.J's about apples and oranges. This stood out so much because of the comic aspect of it. However, he further distinguished himself from the rest of them by using facts to back it up. This was not the only good speech however. I believe all of them were good in their own ways. Many of them were very fact packed and knowledgeable.
