Final Discussion Post

Hi everyone,

This is the final discussion post of the semester. Some suggestions for topics to discuss: What were your perspectives on the web portfolios? What did you observe about the portfolios you saw from each other this week, and did that change the way you thought about working on your own?

Or, reflect on anything else that you'd like to mention. It's been a great semester!

* Please respond by Friday, May 7, 2010 so that I have enough time to complete final grades! Postings any time after Friday, May 7 will not be counted. Thanks!

  1. I wanted to reflect on the class as a whole. It was pretty calm, almost too quiet up until the end. I guess it would have been more entertaining and interesting if there was more interaction between us, but I am relatively satisfied with the way things turned out. It was definitely modernized for the most part, and I almost want to suggest turning this blog into a facebook group for your next course to ensure its involvement in the course. :) It's been fun.

  2. I thought the websites were a good place for us to showcase our creative side if we wanted to. It's a good idea to have a website and it doesn't get any better than using Purdue's servers since we already pay for it. I just didn't really see the relevance since this is a technical speaking class. It was good that we tied our projects into the website but it didn't really make sense to me why we did it in this class. Just my two cents though.

  3. I thought that all of the websites were pretty good. After seeing other sites I saw many different things that I could do with mine because my was fairly simple. I didnt really know how to do much but after seeing the other sites I found out that there are many really simple tutorials and templates to work with. If I were to do it again I would most definitely use one of these templates and add graphics and pages and transitions etc. Overall I enjoyed this class and thought that everyone did great with all the projects.

  4. I definitely enjoyed spending the time we did working on our portfolios. It gave us all a chance to show case what we did this semester. Overall I liked the end results and would suggest this to classes in the future. Also I'd like to agree with AJ. It'd be interesting to see this open up to Facebook. Communication is always thought as this class in college where you do speeches, but I think communication today should be perceived as a means of not only speaking but communicating through other means like blogs, social networking, web sites.

  5. I really enjoyed watching everyone present their portfolios! They were all really well done and showed a ton of personal creativity. I also enjoyed the semester in this class, mainly because everyone was so personable and approachable about pretty much anything! Every speech brought something interesting to ponder and think about! I know I enjoyed this class and can say it was definitely one of my best classes this semester! Thank you everyone!

  6. When I saw people presenting, I kept thinking "oh thats cool", "I want to do that", or "I wish I had thought of that." Everyone's portfolio turned out very polished and very professional. I liked the direction each person took, true to themselves but still a good looking piece of work. I really felt encouraged to go the extra mile by everyone. The class was great to be apart of and I felt like it was a great environment to want to succeed in (not just coast to the finish like I tend to do). I also like the fact that I have a lot I can take away from the portfolio, like something I can hand future employers to look at.

  7. I think the web portfolios gave us a way to express our individually in a different way. Each website was different and displayed each persons style well. They were unique because we were able to express our personality in a new, more technology based way. I think they gave us good practice in a new way of communication that is becoming an everyday method instead of just the normal public speaking associated with most com classes.

  8. In all, I thought this was a very unique class and it was alot of fun being able to be your "test" class. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who has to take a COM class. It's different enough from other COM classes that it does not feel like one. I learned alot throughout the semester, specially the website project at the end.
