Discussion for Week 7

A couple of things to think about...any final thoughts on the last informative presentation? Feel free to share here. I'd also be interested in hearing your first impressions of the web site design assignment. Draw upon your knowledge, experienced or not. We had a lot of good comments and suggestions for additional resources today-- you might want to post those and share any tips or even questions you have yourself.

  1. I thought everyone seemed more comfortable with the presentation process. There weren’t as many nervous speakers and the information was a lot more important this time around because the speech was longer. This gave people more time in front of the audience to get comfortable before the speech ended. As for the website assignment, I have some experience in HTML and CSS. However, even with my limited experience, I still think that there was some confusion during the class presentation about HTML tags, and that the class as a whole could use a more clear explanation of what kinds of tags there are.

  2. This round of presentations seemed much easier for everyone. I think that since we all have been in front of the class multiple times now (including improv)and I believe that makes all of us much more comfortable. As far as the website design I am a little worried. I know the majority of the class has worked on website design or HTML or something along those lines I believe there may be a big curve between some of the students. I know I personally have not worked on anything related to this project. I really do hope that the in class demos will help with the project but I am not 100% sure. I guess we will find out as the project actually starts.

  3. I felt like the last informative presentation went better for me than the first one, which was more noticeable by the comments I received from my peers. The website design assignment seems like it may not be so hard, although, I would still prefer a class to be used as a tutorial of how to use Dreamweaver, as well as how to put the website we create up on our own personal web page that Purdue gives us. Unfortunately, I have pretty much no experience, as well as website creation not being my forte or even a hobby.

  4. Thanks for all the great feedback so far. We've only just begun to discuss the web site project in terms of a communication perspective. We're starting quite far in advance of the actual project due date, and will spend plenty of time demoing, having work days and other sessions to help get a sense of what is happening!

  5. I agree that the last presentations went much better than the first round. As for the website, I'm currently taking a class that is based on HTML and CSS so I have a little bit of knowledge of how to build a website. I have been doing all of the coding in Dreamweaver so far so that it most likely what I'll use. I think the website project will give people just a quick experience with coding.

  6. I'm looking forward to the website design assignment. I've had to do different websites in the past, all pertaining to some abstract theme (sports, video games, etc), for different classes, so it's nice to finally make a site that actually means something and has a purpose. I've done work in CSS/HTML for a while now and I want to explore more options in integrating PHP and ASP.NET/C# pages into the project. I can't wait to see everyone's finished project!

  7. I have probably stated most of what I wanted to say regarding the informative speeches in previous posts. As I may have mentioned before, and as others have said, the second informative speech seemed to go very smoothly for most people. Indeed, hardly anyone in this class seems to me to have shown any significant stage fright or hesitance/nervousness in speaking at any time during the presentations (I myself am probably the most nervous out of anyone here while speaking, although that's less for reasons of stage fright than because I'm afraid of messing up badly and losing major points on the assignment). But in this most recent speech assignment, everyone has had more practice behind them, so their speeches tended to go more smoothly than ever.

Personally, I do not find the prospect of the Web site project daunting. Not only do I have some experience with designing Web sites (having made three of them from scratch in text editors and having worked on numerous single pages in CGT 141), but that type of work is quite a bit up my alley - much more so than oral presentation itself is. I could probably provide advice to others taking this class regarding the more basic aspects of Web design, if asked. (I have, of course, already posted several design tips recently as a regular blog entry.)
